Mmmm, Juice (revisited)

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

My friend Kavi’s coworker gave her a juicer to “try out” (she thought), and then said, “Whatever you do with it, don’t bring it back to me — give it to a friend or someone if you don’t want it.” She didn’t think she’d use it, and knew I would. So I’m the proud, new owner of a juicer. We tried it out yesterday — she made one with apple, celery, ginger, and lemon, and I made a fennel/lemon juice. They were tasty. I’m excited to try more with fennel (which is my current favorite vegetable) and pomegranate…

In other produce news, I’m considering signing up for Door to Door Organics, a weekly produce delivery service. I can’t decide if it would be cost-effective or not. On one hand, it might inspire me to eat in more, and I might learn to cook with new ingredients. On the other hand, I could end up with a lot of rotting vegetables. I like the idea that it’s local whenever possible, but I don’t know if there’s enough variety to suit my taste (I prefer Yukon gold potatoes to Russet, for example, and will buy things like fennel and beets and parsnips more often than bananas, navel oranges, and Granny Smith apples). I could have it delivered to my work, but they don’t guarantee a drop-off time. I don’t have to be present, but I don’t really live or work in places where a box of goodies could be safely left for a while… I think on Tuesday (the would-be delivery day) I’m going to buy the same fruits and vegetables that would be in the “bitty box” — see how much it costs, see if I’d actually eat it all by the next week, and go from there…

  1. Let me know how that works out. Sounds like a great idea if you can get through the veggies.
