Best of 2007 – Melissa’s Edition

From Melissa, who is a music journalist by nature, if not yet by trade, and who has influenced many-a-taste in music (certainly mine — her 2005 selection was truly moving), and who I hope is feeling better:

“Below are eighteen of my favorite tracks of the year. A word about methodology: I narrowed my list first by picking favorite albums, then ranking them in order of preference, then picking a favorite track. For the top eight or so albums, narrowing my choice to a single track was especially difficult; these are albums that form lovely, cohesive wholes, most especially The National’s Boxer. Truly: if I could keep only one album from an entire year of phenomenal releases, this would be it. The wry vocals, the clever metaphor in a perfect lyrical phrase, and the drums rumbling beneath it all…it took a while, admittedly, but Boxer has crept under my skin, all viney and green.”
